I enjoy the idea that ordinary people have the power to impact so many and not even know it. In the Culture Jamming project I wanted to make that same impact, and in so many ways I wanted it to be big and memorable. I got to thinking about public space and trying to impact my audience with out being so much of a nuisance to society, because as I have noticed in some of the Culture Jamming projects artist forcefully imposed there views with no regard for the law. Most in particular artist have illegally put up Graffiti of their work or put up signs with out a permit. My goal was to bypass all the illegal context of the project to get my message across.
As I started the project I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to take the Electronic Billboard signs that are normally located on High School and Junior High campus and have a minute set aside for my ad that would read "Come in we're Open for Success". I wanted to acknowledge the fact that California public schools have been hit tremendously hard by the state budget cuts. Also I wanted to emphasize the importance of education to those children or adults whom may have given up on academic success. However, my efforts at securing a spot on one of the many public school's have not been a total loss but there have been contextual implications that putting the words on the Billboard would cause a public outcry of rejection.
I am still perusing the electronic billboard sign for my project but as of now I don't see it being completed in time for the Culture Jamming documentation to be done for my art 410 class, so I have come up with an alternative. Using illustrator I found a way to mimic the "Come in we're Open" sign to read "Come in we're Open for Success" in which I posted on a wall near a school, yet the effectiveness of my message was not the same as the Billboard idea. In addition, I placed a website address of an article that outlines the impact of the budget cuts to school's in California as well as all over the United States.
