Gaffata

As a class field trip on February 17, 2011 my art 410 class visited the Gaffata Museum. I found this place strange and unusual because as I watched the spinning turbines filled with what looked to be car antennas move at there own paste I couldn't help but to think how pointless the technology was. as an effect of the spinning the car antennas made the sound of rain dropping. Every installation at the Museum made its own sound which made it in some areas unbearable. The boxes of wires that were mounted on the back walls sound like a manufacturing company moving ice or something heavy on a conveyer belt. The ball with the wire in the box sounds like a wind storm. The paper installation being blown by a fan sounds like heavy breathing which particularly freaked me out because I hate to hear a person, who is normally overweight, breathing very deeply as if every breath is a struggle for air. Overall I did not enjoy the Gaffata I thought it was a very torturous event to put an expecting mother through.

MOMA

In the San Francisco Museam of Modern Art I was drawn to Stanley William Hayter's painting Marrionette. After walking  the second floors show I found myself glued to this painting for half an hour. Marrionette is comprised of oil on canvas and is made up of red, yellow, and orange verticle scribbles that go up and down the canvas. These scribbles create the back drop for a black abstract figure. In a couple of  Ellaborate strokes Haytergives the figure what appears to be a head and breast that are made in a circular motion, as well as arms, neck, legs and a torso all of a single stroke. At any rate when the lines come together they create a simple stick figure. The piece is approximately 3" x 2" and it's bight width and overall mounting on the gallery wall gives the playfully effect of a six year old creating the art work. The work looks so primitive almost as if made during the stone age, yet it's technique is so simple anyone could have created it. The piece is so abstract using lines circles and different colors makes up a varge discription of what may make up a womens body. Hayter seems to appropriate inspiration from Jacksons Pollock's Lavender Mist as well as Jean Bastioche's SOMe.

I choose this piece in regards to the fact that my doodles sometimes come out looking similar but some how I never had the courage to acknowledge them as a work of art.

MOAD Museum

On May 2, 2011 was the perfect day to spend time with one of my aunts that I rarely see because she lives in stockton. As we met up during her lunch break from one of the corporate offices in downtown San francisco we began to stroll down Mission and 3rd where we stopped at the Museum of the African Diaspora. The design of this Museum is small but in an interesting way uses all its space very efficiently. On the second floor my aunt and I watched a video about Celia, an African/Cuban woman, documentary about the contributions she made to salsa music, because as it stands she is known to be the currator of the music. Next there is a long hallway that explains how food, hairstyles, and the way we dress as Americans has long roots from Africa. My favorite part of the Museum was the Slave Narrative Room. The room is dark with two rows of bench chairs that are anchored against the wall, and all thats left is empty space in between the two benches. The room is small and boxed in, and on the wall directly in front is a projector that swirls images around as the narrator of each story speaks. Some stories are spoken with so much pain and grief that it makes you cry. Some are very technical and tells their story in a manner that explains what a slave is. The slave narrative room had a profound effect on me because I use to feel as though the days when African American people had been enslaved were long over, but when I listened to the Slave Narratives I couldn't help but feel like lots of people that look like me and have the same color skin as me have been trapped by a slave mentality. In an attempt to lighten my mood I went to the 3rd floor where there is an African Art Exhibit that  embraces all the beauty of being black, bold, and inventive. The last place I stopped was the 2nd floor, and there was this kind of interactive painting that ask all those who view it, "If you were going on a journey what would you take", and I put on a stick note that I would take my family, love, forgiveness, and God. The things I experienced in this Museum makes me question my thoughts about how other nationalities perceive black people. Do they think of use as capable of intelligence or merely freed wild animals? Is our diversity a factor that defines a culture or is it over looked? All I know is my black is beautiful and the creator of this world embed a type of charm in African American people that is found in no other group of people.

Monument for MADD Mothers Against Drunk Driving

FIRST PAGE OF POWER POINT
In memory of Carri Lightner and Laura Lamb

Introduction

There are so many youth in America that have become victims of drunk driving. I want to use a monument to commemorate those lives that have been lost too soon due to drunk drivers.

Background

As an expecting mother I want to somehow be an active participant in protecting not only my child but all children from danger. In my quest to find social groups that aim to protect children, prevent lost of life, and share child loss experiences I came across the none profit group "MADD" or Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

MADD was incorporated on September 5, 1980 After Candace Lighter lost her daughter Carri to a hit and run drunk driver.

Cindi Lamb joined the fight against drunk driving after her daughter Laura became the youngest quadriplegic
when were hit head on by a drunk driver.

Their mission statement, which continues to guide the organization today, read “The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.”
To date, MADD’s work has saved nearly 300,000 lives…and counting.

History

From its humble beginnings 30 years ago, MADD has evolved into one of the most widely supported and well-liked non-profit organizations in America.
MADD organization went from a handful of mothers with a mission to stop drunk driving to one of history’s greatest grassroots success stories—and helped save thousands of lives along the way.

End quote from MADD
last page of power point

The horrible truth about drunk driving is that it can affect anyone at any time. It doesn’t discriminate by gender, race, age or income. And, it’s a crime that’s committed by friends, family members and neighbors, not just “career criminals.” But those facts are also what make drunk driving prevention a cause everyone can support. It’s an issue of public safety— everyone’s safety

ROLAND BARTH

When I think of a monument I think of it as a gateway to the past that has the history of the person who built, the place it has been incorporated into, and the people it represents. In the article "Eiffel Tower" by Roland Barthes, he depicts the earliest observation of the Effiel Tower by the people as not even being aesthectically pleasing, but today that has changed. The size and the placement of its structure makes it monumental interms of representation of a people. However, ironically to the people of Paris it had to grow to be embedded into the meaning of a people. Its purpose had to change, which is not typical of a monumental structure. It has no erganomic qualities and it is purely mathematical, yet overtime its image has changed a culture along with the world as one that has become synonomous with Paris and the French people. The effect that the Eiffel Tower has on human existance, in my opinion is rare, and this type of monument  attracts travelers from all over the world to embrace its appearance on a personal level. Although its purpose was never historical over time the Eiffel Tower has built history around it. In the same interest as the Golden Gate Bridge and the St. Louis Arch it brings tourist from fare and wide to marvel at the work of men.

As a contrast to Barths article Paul Levine's article gives incite to what makes a monument monumental. I understand that a monument is put in place to commerate  something  or someone. Most monuments are commerative and subject to a time and place that should not be forgotten. In my opinion no matter how captivating a monument is and no matter how strong the implications embedded in its structure, unless its meaning is passed down through generations or as expressed as a shared human experience the the initual sting  or sense of pride that it once convied will forever be lost. We use books, folk tails, and monuments to tell our story through human history, but the success of the message depends largely on its convience through time and history. I agree with the quote about building a public record of public historical memory is a practice that has existed with in the United States since its inception in 1776” as a way to keep public record in a land so new and so profoundly built on false truths. In creating these records a new truth is thus created and the world will hold these truths to be self evident because the facts have been presented as unmovable, unchangable, and set in stone.

Culture Jamming in Public Space

I enjoy the idea that ordinary people have the power to impact so many and not even know it. In the Culture Jamming project I wanted to make that same impact, and in so many ways I wanted it to be big and memorable. I got to thinking about public space and trying to impact my audience with out being so much of a nuisance to society, because as I have noticed in some of the Culture Jamming projects artist forcefully imposed there views with no regard for the law. Most in particular artist have illegally put up Graffiti of their work or put up signs with out a permit. My goal was to bypass all the illegal context of the project to get my message across.

As I started the project I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to take the Electronic Billboard signs that are normally located on High School and Junior High campus and have a minute set aside for my ad that would read  "Come in we're Open for Success". I wanted to acknowledge the fact that California public schools have been hit tremendously hard by the state budget cuts. Also I wanted to emphasize the importance of education to those children or adults whom may have given up on academic success. However, my efforts at securing a spot on one of the many public school's have not been a total loss but there have been contextual implications that putting the words on the Billboard would cause a public outcry of rejection.

I am still perusing the electronic billboard sign for my project but as of now I don't see it being completed in time for the Culture Jamming documentation to be done for my art 410 class, so I have come up with an alternative. Using illustrator I found a way to mimic the "Come in we're Open" sign to read "Come in we're Open for Success" in which I posted on a wall near a school, yet the effectiveness of my message was not the same as the Billboard idea. In addition, I placed a website address of an article that outlines the impact of the budget cuts to school's in California as well as all over the United States.

Iconic Logos

As I observed what makes a logo powerful as well as made to out last the competition I noticed the psychology used by the Nike brand to pull consumers in. This company used three big ideas to entice the public senses. The first idea Nike employs on the minds of people is, Nike represents the Greek Goddess of Victory, giving buyers the notion that  they will be victorious if they purchase and use the product. The second is the Logo, because Nike's "Swoosh" with its winged shape draws the eye into the style of the shoe, making it aesthetically integrated into the design of the product. Lastly, the slogan, "Just Do It", makes use of the fact that if you just do it you will be victorious  in whatever you do because of the Goddess Athena Nike being the guiding factor in the product. With the success of the Nike brand fresh in my head I was curious to understand the tricks of the trade when it comes to the clothing company Guess.

In 1977 four French brothers moved to California and started the line Guess. Sponsored by Jordache denim empire Georges, Armand, Paul, and Maurice Marciano gradually gained fame in the fashion industry. Popular for their three-zipper style "Marilyn" jeans, the company created an iconic design to match. The first black and white logo that consist of a black triangle enclosing a black question mark symbol was the first design. The Guess logo became great because of its all American denim look. The look and feeling the jeans gave to the public made the brand a house hold name which allowed the company to expand its name further. The Brand stretched into baby clothing, a watch collection, and also a home collection for bedding. Even with all its early success the brand was victim to the ever changing fashion fades and as a result filed for bankruptcy. In the 2000's the Guess brand was rejuvenated by promoting a sexier more youthful looking line to the new generation of consumers. With a new logo, spelling out the word guess, and using sexy ad campaigns Guess found its way back into the fashion superpower category while still pushing the envelope in denim fashion jeans.
I took Guess iconic symbol that trademarked the company into a fashion powerhouse and manipulated its now obvious context, selling sex to the younger generation, and made the brands intentions clear. Although Guess is not the only clothing company to peddle sex to its consumers, I thought it was ironic that the company's name is in fact Guess which means to make a hypothesis to a question but now leaves nothing to the imagination. I Guess sex really does sell clothing that is....

Dery and Culture Jamming

In Marc Dery’s article "Culture Jamming," he explains that we are living in an age where our lives are lived through television. He explains "Our lives are bond up in the TV experience. Dery is precisely correct that the American public runs home after a long day to watch their favorite evening shows, so much so that the lustiest episode is the topic of discussion for the next day. We are so bombarded by Television and the information distributed by means of television air ways that it is no wonder that it could be used to enhance or distort the truth. As it is explained, culture jamming takes a look at what the media has feed us as being socially acceptable and changes its meaning to educate the public without public censorship.

Postmodern  groups such as General Idea’s appropriation of Robert Indiana's "Love" poster promoted aids awareness in the 90's when the disease was taboo. Another postmodern group by the name of Gran Fury's bus aids which ran in New York took the action of publicizing aids. The aids not only forced the public but  also the government to domore research towards understanding the aids epidemic. Culture jamming has become an avenue for the public to organize and speak out.

Culture Jammer

Guerrilla Girls are an anonymous group of artist who used Ads and Billboards style message boards to educate people about discrimination against women. In 1985 the New York based group used humor to empower and reclaim the feminist word as something uplifting because feminism is seen as a movement that radically advocates for women's rights. However, the group has been criticized for only speaking on behalf of a privileged group of women, and yet the most notable Ad from the Guerrilla Girls is the billboard "Do women have to be naked to get into Met. Museum?". Overlooking freeways and busy intersection, the Guerilla Girls Ad was designed to be plastered on billboards across New York and yet its message opens peoples eyes to the fact that not many Gallery artist are women, while pointing out how history has subjected women in paintings as nudes with the only intention to create sexual delight. In doing this Ad their message was and inescapable, so funding was rejected clamming the ad was to suggestive.

John Cage

When I think of the I Ching, the age old Chinese method of a arriving at an answer to a question, I think of the magic 8 ball that we have all played with as kids. As I think of the 8 ball I remember my questions being complex; For example, "Should I ditch school and go over a friends house?" The 8 ball would respond saying, "Ask me later." I always seen the random consultation of the magic 8 ball as meaningless and I would disregard its answers, whether the answer is favorable or not, as rubbish. As I watch John Gage's work I could not help but feel like his reasoning for using the I Ching was to force spontaneity into an otherwise normal composition of music and art. However, the documentation through video, as well as the disorganized system created by using the I Ching gives his work more substance. In the piece where Gage and Marcel Duchamp's widower play chess was more interesting because it had the distraction of a person going up and down a later. More importantly, in the finished product there was a huge amount of random imperfect shots produced by using the old Chinese method of chance that it grabbed and kept my attention because I wanted to see what random frame would be next.

In the same way John Cage used chance to compose music and art Yvonne Rainer used the same random movements in her "Trio A" choreography. As a anti-art aesthetic Rainer seek to create movements in her dancing  that anyone can reproduce. Although her movements appear uncalculated, the fluidity and tempo of her movements gives the dance she performs grace and clarity.

The Chance Game

Objective:
Using the I Ching how many random photos can be taken in 1 day in the middle of the day.

Materials:
Watch/ with a alarm clock
Coin
Die
Pen
Paper
Camera/ Phone/ Laptop
Photoshop

Documentation is Key to understanding this Chance Project.

Process:
As you go about your daily routine, between the hours of 1pm and 6pm flip a coin.
If the coin lands on heads, roll a die as many times as the hour number you've chosen and take as many pictures as the corresponding number rolled.

Hold arms out at 90 degrees and snap photo. The purpose is not to be able to see the image that will be captured with the attempt to turn your body 360 degrees.

However,
If the coin lands on tails do nothing for an hour.
At the top of the next hour roll the die as many as the corresponding hour
If the ratio between the number of rolls is even flip a coin.
If coin is heads roll the die 2 more times
If coin is tails roll the die 1 time.
If the ratio is still even do nothing for an hour.

After capturing the photographs use photoshop to create a photo collage.

After playing the chance game, roll the die once. Out of the 6 numbers whatever number you rolled import those many pictures into photoshop. If you roll a 1 disregard steps 2 and 3 of the instructions below.

1. Open new background (White seems to help the images blend better)
2. Copy all imported images onto background. (Drag each file onto the white background creating a new layer.)
3. Arrange photo's on background as desired. (Making sure that the pictures overlap and all the images cover the entire background)
4. Play round with the opacity of each layer of pictures until you produce a blur effect in the pictures.
5. If your using Adobe Photoshop CS5 Use the Rectangular Marque tool to highlight each layer individually then use the eraser tool (2500pixel soft brush) to blend the images
6. After blending the pictures to your desired outcome save and your done.

On February 26th I was invited out to the park by my boyfriend. I brought my camera because my boyfriend rarely spends time with his little brother so I wanted to capture the moment. As we spent the day playing, at around 2pm I thought about the class project. Setting my alarm clock to 3pm, at the top of 3pm I started the project. I flipped a coin and it came up heads, so as the in instructions I rolled a die 3 times.  The first time the die read 2, the second time  the die read 4, and the third time the die read 1. In all I took a total of  7 pictures. I held the camera at a 90 degree angle, so as not to be able to see the image of the picture to be taken. I took 7 pictures which turned me in a full 360 degree circle and back around 180 degrees. When I was finish taking the pictures I rolled a die one last time and it landed on 4. I imported four randomly placed photographs into photoshop and proceeded through steps 1 through 6 of the collage making process for creating a collage in photoshop.

Extended Body Project

In doing the extended body project I wanted to enhance my body technologically in a more practical way. What better way to do so then through music. In today's world the music we love is free flowing through the Internet, so I chose an iPod to gather endless amounts of music. As we know the iPod's capabilities  are limited by how the products software is designed. The software routes the product holders' to iTunes to purchase and download music, or upload CD's into an iTunes library. In using this process the user is allowed to utilize as much music as he can purchase monetarily. I decided that embedding the iPod's already patient characteristics of music, media, and photography  into my face, while creating a direct up-link to the internet using my brain would give me infinite amounts of storage capacity and dissolve the need to purchase music.

In order to purchase one of these new and improved iPods one can go into a normal retail store where the device is distributed. However, to control its amazing capabilities everyone must download updates that make the feature more aesthetically pleasing since the technology is located outside the body.

Lastly, upon purchasing the items one must undergo a painful tattooing process that permanently embeds the technology into a persons place of choice on the body. The place chosen on the body must be constantly exposed. I chose the left side of my cheek because it gives me the fastest uploading access to the Internet, making the body at one with technology and gives a person easier control as well as protection against consumerism.
